The best tip I can give, is stay in each class for a full year, and then move up. Winning a Nats in a lower class is more impressive then say coming in 16th in a higher one. Getting the fundamentals is the most important thing in pattern , and that will come with the repetition required to fly each class for a full year.

Since 1998, I have had every F3A plane built or at least finished by Dave Guerin, a Master Builder in N.C. His planes are second to none and his prices are very reasonable as well. (Yes I pay for them too!!)

For novice, I do believe, the DV would be legal at any weight because they removed the 11 pound limit a few years ago with the hopes of attracting some new people into pattern. What it needs to have done to it to be under 11 can be found at the FAQ section on my site.

It would be an incredible advantage to have in novice, because these actually go through all the manuevers much easier then the ones I flew at the worlds, and those flew great. The reason it feels even better I think is the wing loading at 13.5-14 pounds is closer to what might be the optimum for a plane with 1600+ sq. inches.

Thanks for the MJ analogy, and as for the great Hanno Prettner, he is still denying my rematch request from 93. (Just Kidding) I have a huge amount of respect for that guy, and what he did. (He won every World Championship, and every TOC he flew in from 1976-1993 except one, and that was when I won in Austrailia 1991.) I don't believe we will ever see someone that is that good for that long ever again.HE WAS THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!

In Poland we have 2 classes. One is F3A club and the other one is F3A. In F3a club many people compete with models with a .60 or even smaller. The program is very easy: few loops rolls spin and other rather easy aerobatics. I am thinking of building a plane from scratch (no money for a kit or ARF. I also get the building materials (except for the hardware servos ,motor and covering) for free. Do you have any suggestions about the size, angles, wing position (low??) or different. I was thinking of getting myself a mvvs .60 or a magnum. Should I use a tuned pipe or a silencer??

How do you practice, meaning do you do the whole routine or do you practice on a certain maneuver and then add 1 at a time or?

Hey Vert,

I have an instructional video with Chip teaching precision flying. It spends most of the time explaining Pattern Flying techniques but everything we do should be based around precision... right?? It uses a split-screen showing his stick movements. It was made around 1992-1993. Chip does an AWESOME job of narrating what to do... and not do... He'll do the manuever correctly a couple of times and then do it in-correctly to show you what NOT to do... If he made a similar video and concentrated on 3-D stuff it would be perfect!! He could give us pointers on plane setup for 3-D as well as how to do harriers (upright and inverted), rolling circles, rolling harriers, waterfalls, blenders, elevators, flat spins (upright and inverted), torque-rolling, hovering, harrier landings, tick-tocks, roller-coasters, knife edge pointers, knife edge loops and spins, walls, etc., etc. Jason Shulman has a video out but I know Chip could really lend a lot of help to many of us. Let's just keep hoping he can fit it into his ever-increasing busy schedule...

BTW, the president of our local club (Rick Broussard, aka "Bagostix" in Lafayette, Louisiana) is making a living out of our hobby also with the Department of Defense building and flying drones for our Armed Forces for target practice. Wouldn't it be awesome to fly R/C for a living. (And be paid GOOD money to do it!!!!) It MUST be nice.....

I've had the same problem. Ordered a DV canopy in Feb '06, in Dec '06, (when the phone number still worked), spoke to Chip and he said he'd put my name on one and ship it out? It is now Feb '07. no canopy and no way to contact.

Spoke to Chief today. They received a shipment from him last week, all screwed up, missing kits, wrong parts and no parts. But he was able to charge them for everything that was suppose to be there. Sounds like he's mismanged his way down the toilet.
